You’re Next
Director: Adam Wingard
Cast: Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg, A.J. Bowen and Amy Seimetz
When a family comes together to celebrate a35th wedding anniversaryin a quiet country home, their lives are shattered by a deadly, unseen entity that is determined to obliterate them.
While the elusive and malevolent masked assailants effectively slaughter the family one member at a time, one woman rises from the ashes of chaos as a strong fighter. Erin (Sharni Vinson) is a force to be reckoned with – a strong and courageous young woman who refuses to fall prey to the invisible assailants, but instead chooses to survive by any means necessary (her gift for fighting back aids her considerably in doing this). While initially she attempts to protect the frightened and hysterical family when the assailants attack, she ultimately transforms from a frightened victim into a warrior who uses the assassins own power against them.
While initially You’re Next gives the audience the impression that this is going to be merely another terrifying bloodbath, after a brief and awkward introduction to the family, the film shatters any presumption of the story being a tired reincarnation of the past and instead delivers a refreshing and inspired balance of flamboyant humor mixed with good, old-fashioned fear and a solid story. As the nightmare plays out not everyone will survive the attack, but those who do are refined by the malignant fire and come out stronger.
