X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Director: Gavin Hood
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Lynn Collins, Taylor Kitsch
“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” delves into the origin story of Wolverine before he joined the X-Men. From his traumatic childhood, to his years fighting in endless wars with his half-brother, Victor, to finding love and embracing the darkness within to become the Wolverine, Logan’s life of secrets and suffering mold him into the man he is destined to become.
Logan (a.k.a. Wolverine) is a warrior; a man whose past is shrouded in painful memories, and whose love and loyalty is more powerful than most, but hidden so deeply that only those closest to him can find it.
The genesis of Logan’s journey begins in a half-forgotten past set in 1980’s Canada when he was a child named James Howlett. In the aftermath of a tragic murder, Logan’s bone claws manifest and he avenges his father’s death, his rage driving him to kill his father’s murderer and ultimately leading to Logan and his brother, Victor, (a.k.a. Sabretooth) becoming fugitives. A strong bond is forged between the brothers and after swearing their loyalty to one another, they flee into the dark forest and begin a new life of secrets and suffering.
Kayla Silverfox plays a significant role, not only as Logan’s love interest in the film, but also as the catalyst for establishing his identity as Wolverine. There is a beautiful story that Kayla tells Logan which provides a strong symbolic undertone in Logan’s journey. In the story, the moon had a spirit lover who was tricked and consequently separated from this lover for eternity because he could never rejoin her in the spirit realm. Logan’s story reflects a similar tragic fate when he allows Kayla to break the darkness surrounding his heart and unlock his hidden feelings. Kayla’s death is the trigger which motivates Logan to relinquish the temporary half-peace he felt when he was with her, and embrace the power of the animal within him. When he is transformed into the Wolverine and his memory is stolen, Logan is separated from Kayla in the same manner as the spirit lover was separated from the moon; doomed to walk forever alone.
While not the strongest film in the “X-Men” franchise, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” offers a unique look into the life of one of the world’s most renowned comic book heroes. The casting for this film is good, but Hugh Jackman embodies the character of Wolverine bringing a strength and power to the character that makes him almost immortal.
