World War Z
Director: Marc Forster
Cast: Brad Pitt, MireilleEnos, Matthew Fox, James Badge Dale
When the world is shattered by a mysterious pandemic which transforms humans into zombies, one man must risk everything to protect his family from a malevolent entity that has humbled humanity itself. As he traverses the globe in a desperate attempt to safeguard humanity from impending annihilation, he learns the true meaning of being a hero.
The film’s strength rests in an exceptional story and the motivation that drives the main character, Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt). The movie provides enough suspense and adrenaline to keep the audience on the edge of their seats while balancing out the almost electrified atmosphere with softer moments, particularly with Gerry and his family. The suspense is heightened by the fact that initially the audience does not know what the danger is. When the malignancy is identified, the audience has established a connection with the characters and consequently the trepidation is only intensified as the danger unfolds.
The greater strength, however, rests in the motivation that compels Gerry’s character. He’s driven to act not by some romantic notion of heroism, but by his determination to protect his family from impending doom. The connection with Gerry and his family is established almost immediately in the storyline and grows more complex when they are thrown into the cataclysmic maelstrom of unknown dangers, but even when Gerry and his family are separated by circumstance, the connection is not severed, but made stronger his love for his wife and children. His resolve to protect not only his wife Karin (MireilleEnos) and his two daughters, but also with other characters he comes into contact with, creates an emotional depth to Gerry’s character and consequently this makes him the hero.
