War of the Worlds
Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Justin Chatwin Miranda Otto
When the world is threatened by the invasion of alien Tripods, one man must fight to protect his family as humanity is extinguished.
Survival is a powerful theme in “War of the Worlds” and it is conveyed in uniquely different ways by humanity and the alien Tripods that invade Earth.
When humanity’s existence is thrown into peril by an alien invasion, they responded to this threat in two distinct ways: fight it or flee from it. For Ray, as a parent, his first instinct when the alien Tripods invaded Earth was to flee in order to protect his children. His youngest child, Rachel, shared his desire to flee, but Rachel’s fear was expressed by her desire to withdraw into a protective bubble in order to feel safe. His son Robbie had a much different perspective. Rather than fleeing from the impending alien attack, Robbie wanted to fight them; even if doing so meant potentially losing his family. In the end, while they each dealt with the danger in their own way, they all survived.
The greatest illustration of survival may be found in the Tripods, themselves. From the moment the Tripods first invade Earth, they are a powerful entity that has one purpose: the complete annihilation of the human race. The ironic hamartia of the Tripods is that while they possess extraordinary power; they are, in fact, powerless to protect themselves from the very life forms that they sought to annihilate. It is this same vulnerability which allows humanity to endure.
While it is not the best film by director Steven Spielberg, “War of the Worlds” is still a chilling and deeply suspenseful story. While the premise of this film has been done before, Spielberg’s attention to small details is what makes this particular film so brilliant. This is particularly true when the Tripods first emerge from beneath the Earth. While they are terrifying, they also command respect because they are so powerful. The perfect marriage of music, atmosphere, and superb acting from the three main characters allows the audience to truly appreciate the terror that is felt by Ray and the children when they are confronted by the Tripods. If you enjoy a good Sci-fi thriller, then this movie is worth 2 hours of your time.
