Travis Yates is a man of mysteries. Hailing from Liberty, South Carolina, Travis - who goes by the moniker Ty Pillyums when he is rocking it out onstage - is a lead vocalist and gifted songwriter for Flat Land Hills band when he is not working on other music projects. While he plays a wide variety of music (including rock, metal, and rap), Flat Land Hills is Travis’s love child and he has never met three individuals who are more in sync than he and his FLH brothers. He says, “I didn’t discover a love for music as much as a need for it. Anyone who has listened to my lyrics or knows anything about my life knows this…I needed an outlet to get all the pain and rage out. I found that outlet in music. I never planned to be onstage…it was never a dream of mine. I was forced onstage by family who believed in me and I have been onstage ever since the age of 15.” As he has honed his gift, Travis has found inspiration from artists like Kurt Cobain, Marilyn Manson and Pearl Jam. He says his greatest teachers in the music world are the brothers from his own bands and projects and the bands he tours with. Travis’s greatest challenge in music is the people. He says, “I never planned to be onstage. I am a very anti-social person and most of the time I keep my distance because I don’t like people. When the shows are over, I retreat back to my happy place…But to be honest, God love the fans because they gave me a life and means to provide for me and mine. In my situation I would have never had that before.” He has overcome this challenge by adopting the mantra “No matter the situation or the circumstance, the show must go on.” When asked if he has any new music projects in the future, Travis says, “Yes we have a lot about to be coming out. We have a single called “Precious” that will be coming out on our new album. But other than that, I am legally not obliged to say anything. When it comes to balancing his music with other aspects of life, Travis’s loyalty is very clearly anchored to his music. He says, “All I see is me writing songs till the day I keel over. I have no expectations…I have a good crew backing me and a lot of people who believe in me…as far as relationships, it’s something you might not want as a full time musician. Let’s be honest…musicians stay on the road more often than not and we tend to be self absorbed in music. You have a choice…the picket fence or the road. There is no in between. Unless you have a woman who understands your life and understands your needs is down to ride or die with you.”
In closing, Travis offers his thanks to his supporters, telling them, “All I want to do right now is give a shout out to our supporters. We can’t do it without you. We want to give a mad shout out to Tony Fields and Fields and Liza Productions…also all of our band families, all of our people with Stage Fright Music, and of course Unique Kritiques for this opportunity. Now if you’ll excuse me, Ms. Kellogg…I have some habits that are way overdue. With that being said, you have a blessed day and I am done with this interview. *gets up and walks away*
