The Santa Clause
Director: John Pasquin
Cast: Tim Allen, Eric Lloyd, Wendy Crewson, Judge Reinhold
When Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) and his son, Charlie (Eric Lloyd), spend Christmas Eve together, a surprise encounter with Santa Clause catapults them on a journey that will change their lives forever.
Scott Calvin undergoes both a physical and an emotional transformation in his journey to becoming Santa Claus. Initially, when he first becomes Santa Claus, he does not instantaneously portray the iconic manifestation of Santa Claus. Instead, his physical appearance is slowly transformed, and despite Bernard’s warning, Scott struggles at first to accept his new identity. His emotional transformation into Santa Clause is equally daunting. Initially Scott is forced into the role of Santa Claus and vehemently refuses to play the part. As he embarks on his journey to becoming Santa, he attempts to keep his Santa identity a secret, but his transformation is inevitable. As Christmas draws closer, Scott is faced with a difficult choice between embracing his role as Santa Claus or casting it aside when Charlie's mother and stepfather forbid him from seeing Charlie.
The snow globe that Bernard gives Charlie holds a strong symbolic meaning for both Scott and Charlie. Initially, Scott does not believe in the magic that the snow globe – and his new identity as Santa Claus – represents. As Scott journeys deeper into his new life as Santa Claus, the snow globe becomes the catalyst which allows Scott to see that the North Pole and his new identity as Santa Claus are truly real. The snow globe is also a catalyst which allows Scott to remain connected to his son, Charlie. For Charlie, the snow globe represents what his heart already believes – that the North Pole and Santa Clause are truly real. When Scott finally embraces his role as Santa, the snow globe becomes catalyst which allows the bond between Charlie and his father to endure even though they are far apart.
"The Santa Clause" is a charming and humorous movie that puts a unique spin on the child-like belief in Santa Claus. The casting - while it is not stellar - is strengthened by Tim Allen as he transforms from a snarky businessman into a warm and caring father who embraces his new identity as Santa Claus. "The Santa Clause" is definitely worth watching if you enjoy a fun Christmas film.
