Tinkerbell and the Legend of the Neverbeast
Director: Steve Loter
Cast: Anjelica Huston, Ginnifer Goodwyn, Mae Whitman, Lucy Liu, Pamela Adlon, Raven-Symone, Megan Hilty, Rosario Dawson
How far would you go to protect a friend? When a magic comet awakens the legendary Neverbeast of Pixie Hollow, it is up to tenderhearted animal fairy, Fawn, to show the other fairies the Neverbeast’s true nature before he is lost forever.
Perception is a powerful theme in the story; a theme that is illustrated by two very different points of view that the fairies – and especially Fawn and Nyx - have regarding the legendary Neverbeast. For Fawn, her perception of animals is based not on physical appearance, but on something altogether different. The dilemma that Fawn faces in the film is that although she has a duty to protect the other inhabitants of Pixie Hollow from the more dangerous and frightening animals that dwell in Neverland, as an animal fairy, her compassionate heart compels her to protect those same animals even when the other fairies tell her this is wrong.
When Fawn discovers that a mysterious comet has awoken the legendary Neverbeast of Pixie Hollow, her heart is put to the ultimate test when she must choose between following her heart and protecting her friend or following her head and doing what is expected of her. Although initially Fawn does not understand this strange newcomer to Pixie Hollow, as her friendship with Gruff grows stronger, Fawn realizes that life’s choices are not always so simple, and even though a friendship may only last for the space of a heartbeat, the bond forged between her and Gruff will endure forever.
For Nyx, one of the guardians of Pixie Hollow, her belief in the ominous legend that the Neverbeast will bring about the downfall of Pixie Hollow causes her to regard Gruff in a much more negative light. Although her motivation to destroy the Neverbeast stems from her desire to defend her home, her noble intentions prevent Nyx from seeing Gruff as he truly is; a gentle giant whose only desire is to protect Pixie Hollow from imminent danger.
“Tinkerbell and the Legend of the Neverbeast” is by far one of the most sincerely heartfelt and compelling films in the “Tinkerbell” saga. As in the previous films, the animation is stunning, the story, while darker in tone than the other films, still conveys a poignant and emotional message, and the voice acting is flawless, particularly for newcomer Ginnifer Goodwyn who provides the voice for Fawn. If you enjoy the “Tinkerbell” films, then this film is definitely worth watching.
