When a young girl named Grace (Scarlett Johansson) is traumatized in a riding accident, with her horse, Pilgrim, that leaves them both badly injured and causes Grace’s friend, Judith, and her horse, Gulliver, to be killed, Grace’s mother, Annie (Kirsten Scott Thomas) a high-powered New York magazine editor, takes Grace and Pilgrim to Montana to see renowned horse whisperer, Tom Booker (Robert Redford), in hopes that this man can heal both of their broken souls and restore their severed bond.
When Grace and Judith go riding in the snow, there is a terrible, tragic accident when a truck loses control in the icy weather and collides with the girls and their horses and Judith and her horse, Gulliver are killed in the accident. Grace and Pilgrim survive, but this experience has left both of these souls deeply traumatized, both physically and emotionally. This moment is the catalyst which compromises the strong bond between Grace and her beloved horse, Pilgrim; their once-strong bond now tainted with fear and grief and hanging by the slimmest of threads. When Grace comes home early after her first day back at school after the accident, she is watching a video of a moment in the past, when Grace and Pilgrim are jumping in a horse show, and horse and rider are perfectly in sync. This moment compels Grace to tell her parents that she wants to see Pilgrim for the first time since the accident.
When Grace sees Pilgrim for the first time, after the accident, this moment is deeply upsetting for both of them. The last time they were together, Pilgrim was rearing up at the truck, desperately trying to protect Grace from the impending danger. Now, seeing each other again, they are both crippled, body and soul, and it is a shocking experience for Grace, seeing Pilgrim in that state, causing her to recoil in horror, rather than comfort her broken horse. When Grace and her mother, Annie, make the long journey to Montana, with Pilgrim, to persuade Tom Booker, a renowned Horse Whisperer, to look at Pilgrim, Grace initially tells Tom that she wants absolutely nothing to do with helping Tom heal her beloved horse… but when Tom says it is better that she not go with them to look at Pilgrim, calling Grace on her claim that she is not interested, Grace follows her mother and Tom to Pilgrim’s corral, to watch him anyway, as he studies Pilgrim. This moment is vital for Grace, because she sees Tom’s gift for reaching horses, first-hand, and this is what compels her to agree to his condition that she help Tom to heal Pilgrim from this trauma… because in her secret heart, Grace still loves Pilgrim and wants her bond with him to be restored. One of the hardest things that Tom asks Grace to do, in helping him heal Pilgrim, is to re-live that terrible moment of the accident, and tell him the story of what happened, so he can fully understand Pilgrim’s pain. While initially, Grace cannot speak of this, when she sees Pilgrim again, when they are alone, in his stall, she offers the horse a treat, hoping to rekindle their broken bond, but Pilgrim recoils, not quite ready to trust her yet. The wounds have not quite healed. This moment is what gives Grace the courage to revisit that traumatic moment in her life and share it with Tom.
Grace’s healing is illustrated in two ways. Her physical healing is represented by what she uses to support herself. Initially, after she loses her leg in the accident, Grace walks with a severe limp and she uses crutches to get around. She closes herself off from everyone and withdraws into her own secret shell, grief and pain overwhelming her so much that she wants to give up and end her life. As we see Grace start to heal, we see her exchange the crutches for a cane, and she attempts to ride Joe’s horse, Gonzo, to overcome her fear. This moment is what allows Grace to finally let herself feel the grief of losing her leg and she has an emotional moment with her mom, where she tells her mom that she is scared that nobody will want her as she is now… and Annie reassures her daughter that she loves her unconditionally. The moment when Grace has the courage to tell Tom about the accident and finally lets herself grieve the loss of her friend, Judith, is what allows Grace to finally let go of the crutch and walk on her own. Grace’s final moment of healing comes when she and Pilgrim restore their bond that has been broken for so long. While both Grace and Pilgrim are initially scared of this moment, when Grace is sitting on Pilgrim, her heartfelt compassion for her horse healing their broken bond as she caresses him and soothes away his pain. Their bond is healed when Pilgrim allows Grace to ride him once more and their souls are reunited.
The bond of trust that is born between Pilgrim and horse whisper, Tom Booker, is what allows both Pilgrim and Grace to heal, body and soul, from their shared trauma. Although Pilgrim is still traumatized and frightened when he first meets Tom Booker, Annie tells Tom that he is the only person who has been able to get close to Pilgrim, without him lashing out in anger and fear. When Tom is working with Pilgrim in the pond, Pilgrim spooks and flees into the meadow. This moment is important, because it is the first time that Pilgrim chooses to willingly join Tom and allows Tom to touch him. When Tom and Pilgrim are working in the round pen, Tom wants Pilgrim to join up with him and cement their bond. Although Pilgrim initially wants nothing to do with Tom, he finally relents and joins Tom in the middle of the ring and lowers his head willingly, so Tom can remove the lasso from Pilgrim’s neck. When Tom is working with Pilgrim after he hears Grace’s story, we see Pilgrim not only becoming completely in sync with Tom and his horse and following them around the meadow in an intricate dance, but we also see Pilgrim playing again, for the first time since the accident, and rediscovering that proud and noble horse spirit that he had lost. Pilgrim’s final challenge comes when Tom helps both Grace and her horse to heal their broken bond.
