The Great Muppet Caper
Director: Jim Henson
Cast: Jim Henson, Frank Oz, David Goelz, Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt
Following the disappearance of a priceless diamond necklace, the Muppets, led by Kermit the Frog (Jim Henson), journey to London to interview fashion designer Lady Holiday (Diana Rigg) and solve the mystery of the missing jewels. When aspiring model Miss Piggy (Frank Oz) is framed by the real culprits who stole the jewels, it falls to Kermit to bring the truth to light and restore his beloved Miss Piggy’s name.
There is a tangled love triangle woven into the story between Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, and Nicky Holiday, the jealous brother of Lady Holiday. While he tries in vain to win her love, Nicky Holiday’s seduction fails miserably because Miss Piggy’s heart belongs only to Kermit. Nicky Holiday’s love for the beautiful Miss Piggy is also tainted by selfish greed because while his sinister plan is ultimately to steal his sister’s precious diamond, he must cast the blame for this sinister deed on Miss Piggy and by doing so, he ultimately loses her.
The love story between Kermit and Miss Piggy is the essence of perfection. It is not flawless by any stretch of the imagination, but the flaws are part of what make the relationship so perfect. From the moment they first meet, it is clear that Piggy’s heart truly belongs to her Kermit. He is her proverbial “frog in shining armor” because he recognizes her flaws and is willing to love her in spite of them. When Kermit finds out the truth of Piggy’s identity, he is initially angry with her, but ultimately he chooses to forgive her. When Piggy is charmed by the creepy brother of her boss, Lady Holiday, it is Kermit who protects her from his unwanted affections and then defends her when it is mistakenly established that Piggy – not Holiday - has stolen the jewels. When Kermit and Piggy are riding bicycles, Piggy is there to catch Kermit when his acrobatic antics cause him to fall. When Miss Piggy is imprisoned after being framed by the sinister villain Holiday, Kermit disguises himself as her lawyer and promises to free his beloved from prison. When Kermit is captured by the villainous Nicky Holiday during the failed jewel heist, it is Miss Piggy who ultimately saves Kermit from the villain.
The Great Muppet Caper is a story tinged with heartwarming characters, a well-crafted story, and an endless plethora of humor. While the human cast adds an undertone of reality to the story and plays a huge role in doling out humor, the Muppets are truly the heart of the movie. The songs, while not quite achieving the same emotional resonance as they did in the preceding film, are still a worthy addition to the story nonetheless. There is even a brief cameo of legendary father/creator of the Muppets, Jim Henson, and Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who loves the Muppets.
