Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Director: Peter Jackson
Cast: Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen, Ian Mckellen, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Orlando Bloom
When fate allows the Ring of Power to fall into the hands of a young Hobbit named Frodo, he and his eight companions must embark on a dangerous quest to destroy the Ring before the Dark Lord Sauron cloaks their world in darkness.
One of the strongest themes in “The Fellowship of the Ring” is that of the reluctant hero. When Frodo is told by Gandalf that he must take the Ring out of the Shire, he does not immediately embrace this task. It is only after he realizes that his people will be in danger that Frodo agrees to become the Ring bearer. When Frodo and his companions arrive in Rivendell, the representatives of Middle Earth gather to decide the fate of the Ring. While the Council members have very different opinions on what the Ring’s fate should be, it is Frodo who volunteer’s to finish the journey he began, and take the Ring to Mount Doom to be destroyed. Although he could have easily chosen to return to his home in the Shire, Frodo chooses instead to embrace his role as the Ring bearer and continue his journey to Mount Doom alone.
Loyalty is one of the strongest themes in “Fellowship of the Ring”, and nowhere is it shown more strongly than in the characters of Aragorn and Sam. Sam’s loyalty to Frodo is by far one of the most powerful aspects of this film. Although it was Gandalf who initially chose Sam to accompany Frodo on his quest, I think in his heart Sam chose to accompany Frodo because he didn’t want Frodo to carry out his quest alone. When the Fellowship is forged in Rivendell during the Council of Elrond, Sam is the first of the Hobbits to express his desire to accompany Frodo on his journey. When the Fellowship is broken after the Orcs attack, Frodo attempts to carry out his journey alone, but Sam follows Frodo, determined that he will remain by Frodo’s side as he embarks on his journey.
Aragorn is another character whose loyalty shines in this film. At the council of Elrond it is decided that Frodo will take the Ring to Mt. Doom to be destroyed. After he has spoken, Aragorn, having just been revealed as the true King of Gondor, is the first to come forward after Gandalf to aid Frodo in his quest. To me, this is what makes Aragorn a loyal hero; he is willing to give his life to protect his Frodo and ultimately Middle Earth from impending doom. His heroic heart is further demonstrated after Boromir’s death. Aragorn sees that Frodo and Sam have broken away from the Fellowship to carry on their quest alone. He could have easily decided to abandon the Fellowship at that point, but instead he (along with Legolas and Gimli) chooses to rescue Frodo’s companions, Merry and Pippin, from the Orcs.
“The Fellowship of the Ring” is a powerful retelling of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic story. The casting for this film is absolutely flawless, the animation and the musical score are breathtaking, and the message that is woven into the book is conveyed perfectly in the film. If you enjoy Tolkien’s epic trilogy, the “The Fellowship of the Ring” is a film that I would highly recommend.
