“The Fault in Our Stars” a metaphor of perfect love
Director: Josh Boone
Cast: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Egbert, Laura Dern, Nat Wolff
“The Fault in Our Stars” is a heartbreakingly beautiful story which brings together two people walking down the same frigid and lonely road and allows them, just for a moment, to have their paths entwined. The love that is born between them allows Augustus and Hazel Grace to embrace the comfortable and reassuring glow of recognizing the true meaning of love, life, and letting go as they journey ever closer towards the inevitable darkness of mortality.
In the midst of absolute darkness, the only thing that can illuminate the path of human existence is truth. No matter how painful the truth is, if it is not acknowledged, it can never be understood. “The Fault in Our Stars” illustrates the truth that Hazel and Augustus experience both in their struggle with cancer and in their journey through life, itself. The strongest example of Hazel’s journey towards understanding the truth is defined by her willingness to acknowledge the reality of the cancer invading her body and choosing to embrace the cancer and live her life to the fullest, rather than surrendering to the hopelessness of her disease.
One of the most powerful illustrations of Hazel’s fight with cancer comes when she and Augustus visit Amsterdam. After a visit with her favorite author goes horribly wrong, Augustus and Hazel visit the Anne Frank Museum. Hazel’s journey through the Anne Frank House is synonymous with her cancer journey because as she climbs the endless stairways that lead into the attic refuge, this moment symbolizes her determination not to surrender to cancer or the inevitability of death.
“The Fault in Our Stars” is a metaphor for perfect love. The story is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking because while Augustus and Hazel Grace share a beautiful and sincerely emotional connection, it is a connection borne from truth and not fairy tale. The casting is stellar for both the leads and the supporting cast. If you love a good romantic story, this film is most definitely worthy of your time.
