The Dark Knight Rises
Director: Christopher Nolan
Cast: Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Tom Hardy
When a malevolent entity known as Bane unleashes terror on the people of Gotham, Bruce Wayne must find the strength to become Batman again before all is lost forever.
Eight years have passed since the tragic demise of Harvey Dent, and Bruce Wayne now lives a life of solitude. His duty as Gotham’s dark hero is all but a distant memory, but the physical and psychological scars remain as a constant reminder of the terrible price he paid when he was Batman. The irony of Bruce’s dilemma is that although Gotham no longer has need of Batman, without that part of his identity, Bruce is uncertain of his life’s purpose. He is lost.
When Gotham falls prey to a malevolent entity known as Bane, Bruce faces an impossible choice: does he remain Bruce Wayne and surrender Gotham to Bane or does he embrace his identity as Gotham’s hero and become Batman once more? Although he chooses the path of the noble hero, Bruce quickly realizes that putting on the cowl and cape is not enough to defeat Bane. In the end, Bruce realizes that in order to protect the people, he must first reclaim his identity as Batman. Only then would he have the power to overthrow Bane and save Gotham.
In the end, Bruce gives the people of Gotham the ultimate gift as Batman by sacrificing his own life so that they could live. In life, he was the silent guardian who protected Gotham from the darkness that sought to destroy it. In death, instead of becoming the villain, he became the hero that Gotham never knew it had. By casting aside his identity as Batman, Bruce Wayne the man was finally able to know peace.
