Star Trek Beyond
Director: James Wan
Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Leonard Nimoy,
The starship Enterprise, led by Captain James. T. Kirk has reached the halfway point in their five-year mission to explore deep space. As they explore a dangerous and uncharted nebula, the Enterprise is attacked and destroyed by a vicious group of hostile aliens. With the crew stranded on a primitive planet and with no apparent means of rescue, Kirk and his shattered crew find themselves fighting against a ruthless enemy with a well-earned hatred of the Federation and everything it stands for. Only a rebellious alien warrior can help them reunite Kirk’s family and stop this deadly menace from beginning a possible galactic war.
While the first film introduced us to the characters, and the second film really illustrated the humanity of both Kirk and Spock and the friendship that entwines them, Star Trek Beyond focuses on the same two characters, but more on what their identity is now that the heroes they have lived in the shadow of for so long (Spock Prime and Jim’s father, George Kirk, who sacrificed his own life to save his wife and newborn son) are now gone.
Kirk has reached a crossroads in his life. While he is the captain of the most illustrious starship in the fleet, as he reaches his thirtieth birthday, he has now surpassed his father’s age by one year…and he doesn’t quite know what to do with his life. He joined Starfleet to honor his father’s legacy, and now that he has surpassed his father’s lifespan, his star has grown cold and dim. And while the Enterprise crew has become his family, Kirk still must decide where his course goes from here. Will his star guide him to accept his promotion to Vice Admiral and hang up his wings…or will his heart tell him to remain with his family on the Enterprise, exploring the vast and mysterious beauty of space?
When the crew arrives at Yorktown, Spock is given the heartbreaking news that his older self, Spock Prime, has died. Spock literally has no idea how to fathom the enormous weight of this tragedy...his logic tells him that he needs to take up where his predecessor left off and return to New Vulcan to help restore his people and culture, but I think his heart remembered what Spock Prime told him to do; to remain on the Enterprise with his friend....because that friendship between Spock and Kirk would be vital for both of them…that they would need each other.
I think that moment with Spock and the photograph was perfect. It was a perfect homage to Leonard Nimoy and saying farewell to him (may he rest in peace) and the character he made famous, but it was also a gentle, silent reminder to young Spock of the wisdom Spock Prime shared with him at their first meeting…Spock needs Kirk and likewise, Kirk needs Spock and SP did not wish to deprive young Spock of everything that Spock and Kirk could accomplish together.....and the friendship (and brotherhood) that would define them both. That photograph was a heartfelt reminder that Spock was exactly where he needed to be…with his true family on the Enterprise.
