Secondhand Lions
Director: Tim McCanlies
Cast: Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Haley Joel Osment
“Secondhand Lions” is a coming-of-age story about Walter, a young teenager who is sent to live with his uncles, Hub and Garth, for the summer while his mother follows her own dreams of finding love, stardom, and ultimately the uncles’ secret fortune.
Love plays an integral role in the makeup of the story. What begins as a summer that neither Walter nor his uncles, want is soon transformed into something altogether deeper when Walter realizes how much he truly cares for these two men. With them, Walter has found something that he never truly had with his mother: pure, unconditional love. As the his relationship with the two men grows stronger, Walter realizes how desperately he needs them in his life and in spite of their differences and their individual suffering, they each find healing in the love shared between them. In the end, Walter demonstrates his love for his uncles by keeping the whereabouts of their money secret from his mother and her rapacious boyfriend and choosing to return and live with them rather than go with his mother back to a life of darkness and pain.
Another example of love in the movie is illustrated in the relationship between Walter and Jasmine, the lion he adopts as a pet. In the beginning, Walter saves Jasmine from being hunted by his uncles. He nurses her back to health and sets her free in his uncles’ cornfield. Jasmine expresses her love for Walter by sacrificing her own life protecting him from his mother’s boyfriend, Stan when he attempts to force Walter into divulging where the treasure is.
“Secondhand Lions” is a story of adventure, excruciating heartache, and learning how to love again. The casting is exceptional, particularly for the roles of Michael Caine and Robert Duvall as the eccentric uncles Hub and Garth. The story is so hilariously lighthearted and emotionally tender that it allows the viewer to believe that the emotional journey that the characters embark on is truly genuine. These are but a few reasons why this movie is a worthy classic.
