Room
Director: Lenny Abrahamson
Cast: Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Sean Bridgers, Joan Allen, Tom McCamus
It is often been said that there is no love more powerful than the love shared between a mother and her child. In the film “Room”, this love is illustrated in the bond shared between five year old Jack and his mother, Joy, as they embark on an incredible journey into the real world after being held prisoner for seven years in their own.
The most powerful theme in this film is the bond between mother and child. When the story begins, the mother and her son have been imprisoned in Room for seven years. Room is their entire world and they are the only people who dwell there. When their life in Room becomes too dangerous for her son, Jack’s mother, Joy, faces an excruciating choice: does she keep her child with her in Room where she can protect him? Or does she risk losing what is most precious to her – her child – so that they may both be free?
A cruel irony is realized when Joy and her son escape from Room, only to find themselves trapped in an altogether different prison; one that has no bars or locks, but holds them captive nonetheless. In Room, Joy created a world where only she and Jack were real and nothing else existed; a world where she devoted her life to protecting her son and making sure that he was happy and safe and loved. When Joy and her son escape from Room, they find that the world outside is much different from the world they created in Room, but the bond that connects mother and son remains infinite and unbreakable.
The love that is shared between Jack and his mother is illustrated in two ways. When Joy decides that she and her son must escape from Room, she gives Jack a keepsake – a tooth – and tells him that if he holds onto this keepsake, that she will always be with him. When he and his mother are temporarily separated, Jack chooses to give his mother a precious gift – what he calls his “strong”. Although he has not allowed anyone to cut his hair (his “strong”) up until this point, and he doesn’t understand why his mother has suddenly vanished, Jack believes that by giving his mother his strength, he can save her life and they can be together again.
“Room” is a heartbreakingly beautiful story about the love shared between mother and child and how that same love can give them the strength to endure when nothing else can. The casting for this movie is flawless, particularly for Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay who shine onscreen as Joy and Jack. These are but a few reasons why “Room” is a film that I would highly recommend.
