In this second installment of the series Once Upon a Time, Regina is threatened by the growing bond between Emma and her newfound son, Henry. As tempers rise between the two mothers, Regina does everything in her power to break the bond between Emma and her son and force Emma out of Henry’s life forever. In another realm, the Evil Queen struggles to enact the curse that will seal the fate of all of the fairy tale characters, even if it means paying the ultimate price to see her curse fulfilled.
Power plays a very important role in this episode, and it is particularly linked to the characters of Emma and Regina.
Regina uses power to achieve her own goals, both as the Evil Queen and as the Mayor of Storybrooke. As the Evil Queen, Regina uses her dark magic to enact the curse that would seal the fate of Snow White and the rest of the fairy tale characters. Although her desire for power comes at a terrible price, Regina is unwavering in her desire to see her curse enacted, even if it means losing the person she loves the most. As the Mayor of Storybrooke, Regina uses her power as the town’s ruler, when she sees the bond forming between Emma and Henry to try and persuade Emma to leave Storybrooke and her son.
While Regina uses power to achieve her own goals, both as the Evil Queen and as the Mayor of Storybrooke, Emma’s uses a different form of power – the power of a mother’s love - in order to protect her son, Henry. Although she does not yet believe as Henry does that the town is filled with fairy tale characters, the part of her that is his mother is determined to make sure that Henry is safe. Her resolve only grows stronger as Regina attempts to scare her away, and she is willing to go to extraordinary measures to prove that her power matches that of Regina.
