Once Upon a Time: Pilot
Director: Mark Mylod
Cast: Ginnifer Goodwyn, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parilla, Josh Dallas, Jared Gilmore, Robert Carlyle
In this first installment of Once Upon a Time, the stories of our most beloved fairy tale characters come to life from their own unique perspectives as they traverse a fragile path between fantasy and reality in order to find their happy endings.
The story begins with the wedding of Snow White and Prince Charming. All seems to be going well for Snow White and Charming as they find their happy ending, but their joy is not to last. An evil queen named Regina crashes the wedding and casts a curse on Snow White and the rest of the fairy tale characters; a curse that would rob them of their memories and their happy endings forever.
One of the most powerful themes in this episode is the love shared between mother and child.
In the fairy tale realm, when the Queen invokes her curse to steal all of the happy endings from the fairy-tale characters, Snow White chooses to send her newborn daughter, Emma, through a magic wardrobe so that Emma would not be touched by the curse’s darkness. Snow White’s sacrifice was an act of pure love; she wanted her daughter to have the chance to live, even if that meant that Snow White might never see her again.
The bond shared between Emma and her son, Henry, in reality is equally as powerful. While the circumstances which prompted Emma to give up Henry for adoption were not nearly as dire as Snow White’s reasons, her objective was the same. She wanted her son to have his best chance at life, even if that life did not include her. When fate allows Emma to be reunited with her son, she chooses to stay in Storybrooke and protect him even though she initially does not share his belief that the people of Storybrooke are characters reincarnated from fairy-tales.
