Mockingjay Part 2
Director: Francis Lawrence
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson,
In “Mockingjay Part 2” the smoldering flames of rebellion have ignited into a full-blown revolution. As the final battle looms on the horizon, Katniss and her comrades realize that the stakes are higher than mere survival and not everyone will escape the flames of war unscathed. Will Katniss succeed in liberating her people and restoring peace to Panem or will this final battle with President Snow ultimately extinguish the Girl on Fire?
While she is physically and emotionally shattered by the Hunger Games, the loss of her former lover, Peeta, and especially the malevolent deeds of President Snow, the one thing that keeps Katniss from succumbing to the darkness is the fragile flame of hope and humanity which allows her to recognize the value of both her life and the lives of her people. While the rest of Panem is hell-bent on war, Katniss is the only one who truly realizes that destroying life will ultimately extinguish that flame of humanity that burns within her…it will not bring peace.
And although one of her conditions for embracing her role as the Mockingjay was that she be the one to kill President Snow, when the opportunity finally came, I think Katniss finally realized that killing Snow would not bring her the peace and absolution that she so desperately yearned for. His death would only add to the excruciating guilt that she is suffering having witnessed so many of her people die. And in the end, while the scars of her past never completely healed, I believe Katniss did find some measure of peace…even if that peace came at a terrible price.
At long last, my journey with Katniss Everdeen and “The Hunger Games” has come to an end. “Mockingjay Part 2” is an exceptionally powerful conclusion to a brilliant story. The casting is flawless, particularly for Jennifer Lawrence who shines as Katniss Everdeen. The emotional journey that I have followed her on these last four years has been nothing short of heartbreakingly extraordinary. These are but a few reasons why I would highly recommend not only this film, but “The Hunger Games” saga as a whole.
