The Kings of Dance still smolder in ‘Magic Mike XXL’
Director: Gregory Jacobs
Cast: Channing Tatum, Jada Pinkett Smith, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, Joe Manganiello, Gabriel Iglesias,
It has been three years since Magic Mike, the self-proclaimed King of Dance, relinquished his crown and moved on to pursue a career away from the glamour and one dollar bills of his life as an exotic dancer. Now, Mike will reunite with the Kings of Tampa as they journey to Myrtle Beach to dance together one last time.
The perfect irony of Mike’s character is that while his life with Brooke did not bring him the happiness he was searching for, when he is initially reunited with the Kings of Tampa, he is not entirely comfortable settling back into his role as an exotic dancer either. The only thing that remains constant in Mike’s life is his love of creating art in furniture and cars. Although he is initially reluctant to embrace his role as the King of Dance, in his heart, Mike is still a dancer and as he and the other Kings of Tampa journey ever closer to Myrtle Beach, Mike finds himself not only slipping back into his identity as Magic Mike, but also inspiring the other Kings of Tampa to enjoy the magic of dancing again without getting caught up in a tangled web of complicated and unnecessary drama.
The thing that makes “Magic Mike XXL” so much better than its predecessor is that it removed the three things that were negative about the first film – Mike’s annoying girlfriend, the drugs and the drama with Adam – and replaced it with humor and ridiculously attractive men who enjoy dancing and having fun in each other’s company.
“Magic Mike XXL” is one of those rare films that takes the essence of what made the original good and makes it better. The casting for this film is excellent, particularly for Channing Tatum who looks completely comfortable in the role of Magic Mike. The dance routines are more creative in this film, the chemistry between the actors is sizzling and the movie is just fun. While not a film that everyone will enjoy, I would still highly recommend “Magic Mike XXL”.
