How to Train Your Dragon 3
Director: Dean DeBlois
Cast: Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Gerard Butler, Kit Harington,Cate Blanchett, Craig Ferguson
In the third and final installment of the How to Train Your Dragon saga, the adventure continues as Hiccup, now Chief of his clan, fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia. Meanwhile, Toothless' discovery of a beautiful, elusive mate…a Light Fury...draws the Night Fury away. When danger mounts at home, and Hiccup's reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind.
There is an old proverb that says “If you love something, set it free…” This saying is particularly true for Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless, as they embark on the third and final chapter of their journey together.
It has been six years since fate entwined the lives of these two friends. They have now become leaders of their respective clans and their bond is stronger than ever. Hiccup has taken up his father’s crown and is now Chief of Berk, with his beautiful girlfriend, Astrid, at his side, and his faithful friend, Toothless, is now the Alpha of the clan’s dragons. The love shared between Toothless and his beautiful Light Fury Queen is illustrated beautifully in the movie. Neither one of them speak, but you can still tell exactly what these characters are feeling; whether they are sharing a scene together and Toothless is courting her, or when Toothless is alone or when he is interacting with Hiccup. Just the expressions, the vocalizations, the behaviors tell a beautiful story unto itself about their budding romance and Toothless's changing friendship with Hiccup.
The love shared between Hiccup and Toothless is also extraordinarily strong. Toothless and Hiccup have grown up in the past 6 years. They are both the respective leaders of their clans now, and they are both finding love (Toothless with his beautiful Light Fury Queen and Hiccup with Astrid) and trying to understand those relationships. In my heart, I feel these two will always share a deep bond, but for now, they must go their own ways. And that is the very definition of love: if you love something, set it free. Hiccup did not have to set Toothless free. He did not have to make him the independent tail fin. He chose to let Toothless be free because he loves his friend and he wants Toothless to be happy…even if doing so meant his friend having to leave.
While I have very much enjoyed all three How to Train Your Dragon films, I must say, Dreamworks really sticks the landing with this final installment. The animation is absolutely stunning, the characters reach a very emotional, yet satisfying end to their story arcs, the music is phenomenal and the message is very poignant. This is definitely a movie I would HIGHLY recommend.
