The Vampire Diaries: Growing Pains
Director: Chris Grismer
Cast: Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Kat Graham, Candace Accola
In “The Vampire Diaries” Season 4 premier, Elena has survived the car crash, but she now faces an excruciating choice between embracing her new life as a vampire and succumbing to death. Meanwhile, Stefan seeks Bonnie’s help as he desperately searches for a way to save Elena from becoming a vampire and Damon must risk his own life when the two people he loves most are captured by an entity that is determined to rid the world of vampires forever.
Love is one of the more powerful themes in this episode, and although there are many ways that it is demonstrated clearly, it is the intimately subtle illustrations of love that are the most significant.
While Damon is incensed by Elena becoming a vampire, and is more realistic about her fate than Stefan is, his love for Elena is what compels Damon to put his own life in danger in order to save Elena and Stefan when they are abducted. Likewise, it is Stefan’s love for Elena which compels him to find a way to reverse her transition into vampirism. He would rather allow Elena to remain human and be happy than live as a vampire, even though her decision to remain human means that their love will not last forever.
Ironically, although Rebekah is the one responsible for extinguishing Elena’s life and causing her to become a vampire, she is also the one who is responsible for saving her life by helping her complete her transition into vampirism. Although she never says so, I believe that Rebekah sees in Stefan and Elena the love that she was never able to have herself. It is the strength of their love that compels Rebekah to help Stefan save Elena’s life.
