Gravity
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Cast: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney
When a storm destroys their ship and leaves them stranded and alone in the unforgiving darkness of space, Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Commander Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) embark on a desperate journey to overcome impossible odds and return home to Earth.
When Dr. Stone and Kowalski experience a debris storm in space, Dr. Stone is separated from the ship and she is physically and emotionally lost in the darkness until Kowalski reconnects with her. While he can do little to assuage her fear, her connection to Kowalski is like an anchor; his crackling humor and his experience in the face of imminent death provide a comforting presence which gives her the strength to hold on as well.
When she is alone in space and her hope of returning to Earth alive is completely lost, it is the memory of her daughter and Kowalski that give Ryan the strength to complete her journey to the Chinese station and return home. While the memory of the daughter she lost offers Dr. Stone a moment of peace in the icy void of hopelessness she is lost in, it is Kowalski’s supposed return from death which compels Ryan not to surrender to death, but rather, to life. By the end of her journey, Dr. Stone has made peace with losing her daughter and Kowalski and her determination to find her way home is restored.
“Gravity” is an epic film that is visually stunning, emotionally compelling and allows Sandra Bullock to shine brighter than the stars as she fights to overcome the infinite darkness of space. The music for this film is gorgeous and the banter between Dr. Stone and Kowalski is a perfect foil for the unforgiving intensity that the characters find themselves in. Overall, I would highly recommend this film.
