Girl Meets Rileytown
Director: Michael A. Joseph
Cast: Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel, Rowan Blanchard, Sabrina Carpenter, Peyton Meyer, Cory Fogelmanis
In this episode of Girl Meets World, Riley and Maya learn a valuable lesson in friendship when Riley falls prey to a bully’s cruelty.
From the moment we first see Riley and Maya in this episode, it is apparent that something is terribly wrong with Riley. Rather than being her usual, bubbly self, Riley is hiding in her bed pretending to be sick. The reason for this is Riley is hiding from a conflict – she is the victim of cyber-bullying. Although she is emotionally shattered, Riley doesn’t share the reason for her pain with anyone…not even Maya. Instead, she chooses to hide her fear and insecurity and suffer this unnamed tormentor alone.
One thing that stands out in this particular episode is a moment when Riley’s father, Cory, tells his class “There is nothing more valuable than friends when you have to go through life.” I have found this belief to be especially true when I am going through a crisis. No matter how much pain I am in, or how scared I am, I know in my heart that my friends will always be there for me. The same can be said for Riley’s friends.
Even though Riley tries to block them out, when her friends discover the true reason for why Riley is so upset, their immediate reaction is to protect her. Although Maya, Farkle and Lucas help Riley break down the physical and emotional walls surrounding her heart, and they surround her with their love and support, Riley’s true healing only comes after she overcomes her fear by confronting her bully and breaking the shackles of power that the bully has over her by showing everyone who she truly is.
