Girl Meets Mr. Squirrels
Director: Rider Strong and Shiloh Strong
Cast: Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel, Rowan Blanchard, Sabrina Carpenter, Peyton Meyer, Cory Fogelmanis, Will Friedel
In this episode of Girl Meets World, when a conflict between Riley and Maya threatens to bring an end to their lifelong bond, Cory summons his brother, Eric Matthews, to teach the girls the true value of friendship.
Friendship plays a strong symbolic role in this episode and nowhere is it seen more clearly than in the characters of Riley and Maya. When the episode begins, Riley and Maya are in a heated argument. Although it is unclear why the girls are so upset, what is clear is that neither of the girls is willing to concede and their disagreement is threatening to ruin their friendship. When the girls are in Cory’s class later, it is revealed that Lucas has finally grown tired of Maya’s teasing and has retaliated by calling Maya a name.
Concerned by the conflict that is growing between the two girls, their teacher, Cory Matthews, tells them of another fight that he and his friends had in college; one that while fun at first, soon spiraled out of control and threatened to destroy the friendship between Cory and his friends. Unwilling to let history repeat itself, Cory summons the one person that he believes can restore Riley and Maya’s friendship: his brother, Eric.
One of the most telling moments in this episode is when Maya tells Riley, “When I knew you had my back, I felt at peace…now I am not at peace.” To me, this exchange between the two girls is important because it allows the audience to understand the real reason why Maya is upset. Maya is upset not because Lucas retaliated, but because Riley did not defend her when he did. When Eric is summoned by Cory to restore peace between the two girls, he discovers that the reason Maya is fighting with Riley is because Lucas called her a short stack of pancakes.
Although she may be upset because Lucas called her short, I think the real reason why Maya is so emotional is because up until this point in their friendship, Maya has always felt safe knowing that no matter what happened, Riley would always be there for her. In this instance, rather than being there to protect her friend, Riley sided with Lucas, and as a result, Maya is feeling scared and vulnerable because for the first time, she doesn’t have that security of knowing her best friend has her back. In the end, Maya learns that her true stature comes from knowing that she can overcome anything so long as she believes in herself.
