Girl Meets the Forgiveness Project
Director: Joel Zwick
Cast: Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel, Rowan Blanchard, Sabrina Carpenter, Peyton Meyer, Cory Fogelmanis
In this episode of Girl Meets World, Maya learns the true meaning of forgiveness when she confronts a painful moment from her past after Cory assigns the class a forgiveness project.
I find it very interesting that both Lucas and Riley say something to Maya about forgiving her father when Cory gives them the assignment, but while she and Lucas share a look, the only one that Maya tells to butt out is Riley. What's even more interesting to me is that Lucas seems to know about Maya's painful, non-existent relationship with her father. This is surprising because up until this moment, Maya has only ever shared her feelings concerning her father with Riley’s family and Shawn. Later, when she's reading her letter to the class, Lucas silently puts his hand on her shoulder, as if he knows how much this moment is hurting her and he is silently telling her that he is there to comfort and protect her.
Cory also plays a vital role in Maya’s journey towards forgiveness. Cory gives Maya the ultimate gift. He didn’t teach her about forgiveness so she could forgive her father. On the contrary, he knew the pain she was secretly feeling and by teaching Maya forgiveness, he allowed a scared, lonely little girl to relinquish those painful memories and finally forgive herself. Although Maya was unable to forgive her father for abandoning her, when she finally broke the shackles that had held her captive to her pain, she was finally able to feel peace.
