Frosty the Snowman
Director: Jules Bass, Arthur Rankin Jr.
Cast: Jimmy Durante, Jackie Vernon, Paul Frees, June Foray, Billy de Wolfe
Inspired by the beloved Christmas song written by Walter Rollins and Steve Nelson, “Frosty the Snowman” is a charming animated tale about a snowman named Frosty who is brought to life when he dons a magic hat. When the sun threatens to melt Frosty, he embarks on a magical journey with a little girl named Karen and a white rabbit named Hocus Pocus to find a new home in the North Pole.
Snow plays a strong symbolic role in “Frosty the Snowman”.
When the story begins, the narrator tells us that the first snow is a very special kind of snow; the children believe that the first snow is magical…especially when it falls on Christmas. When the children go out to play in the snow, they fashion a snowman and one of the children, a little girl named Karen, christens their snowy friend with the name Frosty.
At first, there is nothing particularly special about Frosty; that is, until he is brought to life by a magic hat. The children are surprised and delighted that Frosty is alive, and they have a grand time parading through the town. Before long, however, the children must bid their friend farewell because Frosty must embark on a journey to the North Pole before he melts away.
When a magician’s cruel trick causes Frosty to melt, all hope seems lost until a very special friend intervenes: Santa Claus. He tells Karen that Frosty was born from Christmas snow and because of this, he can never truly vanish. So, with a bit of magic and a swirl of frigid, December wind, Frosty is once again restored to life and Santa invites Frosty to live with him in the North Pole.
