“Follow That Bird”
Director: Ken Kwapis
Cast: Caroll Spinney, Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Sonia Manzano, Roscoe Ormon, Alaina Reed-Hall, Sally Kellerman
When Big Bird is taken from his home on Sesame Street and taken to live with a family of Dodos, it is up to his Sesame Street family to rescue him and bring Big Bird back home to Sesame Street.
One of the predominant themes in “Follow That Bird” is family and it is expressed in two very different ways. From Ms. Finch’s perspective, family is defined from a physical perspective. She believes that the only way Big Bird will ever truly be happy is if he is adopted by a family of birds, and she is willing to go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that Big Bird is returned to his new bird family, the Dodos. From the perspective of Big Bird’s friends on Sesame Street, family is defined more from an emotional perspective. Although none of them resemble Big Bird physically, they believe that family is created from people who love you most. When Big Bird runs away from the Dodos, it is their love for Big Bird that compels his friends to journey across America to bring Big Bird home again.
One of the things that makes “Follow That Bird” so special is that it is life imbued with the essence of pure imagination as seen through the eyes of a child. Although he is an 8 ft tall bird, Big Bird is still 6 years old and he is very much a child. Although he is initially intrigued by the notion of having a bird family, his dream is soon shattered when he realizes that what he hoped to find was much different from what was really there, and like most children who are frightened and alone, he yearns for the comforting security of his home and the love of his real family on Sesame Street.
“Sesame Street” has been a part of children’s lives for generations and “Follow That Bird” conveys perfectly the same innocence and imagination that makes this children’s show so special and unique. The animated characters that are brought to life on this iconic street are as emotionally real as the human characters and they are beloved by the young and young at heart. While the movie has a stellar human cast, the Muppet characters are truly the heart of this movie. If you enjoy the Muppets, then this is a movie I would highly recommend.
