Once Upon a Time: Operation Mongoose
In the season 4 finale of Once Upon a Time, the heroes of Storybrooke are trapped in an enchanted world created by Rumplestiltskin and the Author; a world where the villains triumph over the heroes.
Although the character’s identities are reversed in this distorted fairy tale land, it is not the Author that defines who the heroes and villains are, but rather, the choices that the characters make as the story unfolds.
Emma’s choice in this episode stems from her role as the Savior. In order to save Regina from being lost in darkness as a villain after the Apprentice frees Rumplestiltskin from the dagger, Emma makes the ultimate sacrifice in the name of love; she chooses to become the Dark One herself, even though doing so meant that Emma might never see Hook or her family again. Her willingness to sacrifice her own happy ending with Hook so that Regina would not lose the happy ending that she had been waiting so long to find is what makes Emma a true hero.
The one element that remains the same is Henry. Even though he is utterly alone in this world, Henry still has the heart of the truest believer and it is his unbreakable faith that makes Henry more powerful than the Author. Desperate to save his family before they succumb to the Author’s malevolent scheme, Henry embarks on a dangerous quest to rescue his mother, Emma Swan, and the rest of the heroes before they are trapped in darkness forever.
