Once Upon a Time: Breaking Glass
In the fifth installment of OUAT Season 4, the audience is given a glimpse into Emma’s past as she discovers the true value of friendship and discovers a surprising connection that links her with the Snow Queen. Meanwhile, in Storybrooke, Queen Elsa continues her desperate search for her sister, Anna, and an unlikely alliance is forged when Emma and Regina join forces to fight the Snow Queen.
The irony of this episode is that while Emma and Lily’s friendship is borne from a strong friendship that is forged from their common bond as orphans, Emma and Regina’s bond is borne from the heartbreak that Emma inflicts on Regina by bringing Robin Hood’s wife, Marian to Storybrooke. When the Snow Queen threatens the people they love, Emma and Regina forge a fragile alliance to defeat her. And while the bond between Emma and Lily is severed after Emma learns the truth about her, the bond between Emma and Regina is healed by their shared desire to be understood and accepted for who they are.
Fear is also a strong theme in this episode and it is illustrated most strongly in the characters of Queen Elsa and Mary Margaret.
While she is learning to control her magic, there is a part of Elsa that is still afraid of her powers. The Snow Queen uses this fear as a catalyst to imprison Elsa while she attacks Emma and Regina, but Elsa’s concern for her new friends is stronger than her fear and she is able to break the Snow Queen’s shackles, thus overcoming her fear. Mary Margaret’s fear stems from her desire to protect her second child from the darkness that threatens them. While at first she is reluctant to leave her son even for a moment, when she does leave him, she is able to restore the part of herself that she lost.
