Once Upon a Time: White Out
In episode 2 of Once Upon a Time, Storybrooke is quite literally frozen over when Queen Elsa from Disney’s Frozen comes searching for her sister, Anna. When she and Emma get trapped in an ice cave, it is up to Emma’s father, David, and Captain Hook to free her before she succumbs to the cold. In the Enchanted Forest, Anna meets David and the pair forms an alliance against a malevolent villain, Little Bo Peep, who is threatening to force David and his mother from their farm.
Emma and Elsa share a common bond. They both possess magic that they don’t fully understand and because of that, they struggle to control it. They both grew up alone without the love and support of their parents, and as a result they feel unprepared for the mantle of responsibility they are each given (Emma as the Savior and Elsa as Queen of Arendelle). Finally, they are both separated from the people they love and desperate to be reunited with them. Elsa is separated from her sister, Anna, and she feels scared and vulnerable in Storybrooke because Anna helped her to control her magic. Her fear is the catalyst which causes Elsa to inadvertently trap Emma in the ice cave. Her fear also compels Elsa to erect an ice wall around Storybrooke in order to find her sister, Anna.
When Emma is trapped in the icy cavern with Elsa, it is Hook who tries to break through the ice with his bare hands to free the woman he loves. His love for Emma is further demonstrated when he is the one who carries Emma out of her icy prison and holds her to keep her warm until the town’s power is restored.
