Once Upon a Time: Enter the Dragon
In this episode of Once Upon a Time Season 4, Regina joins the Queens of Darkness and attempts to gain their trust so that she can uncover their secret weapon. And in the Enchanted Forest, a younger version of Regina struggles to learn magic under the guidance of Rumplestiltskin, but learns a much more valuable lesson when she helps Maleficent regain her lost power.
While in the Enchanted Forest, Regina is the impatient student of magic who is chafing because she is in the bright glow of Snow White’s happiness and she, herself, cannot master the art of magic. When fate allows her to cross paths with Maleficent in the Enchanted Forest, instead of Maleficent teaching her how to master the art of magic, it is Regina who inspires Maleficent to reclaim the power that she lost when she fought Briar Rose. Once she has helped Maleficent restore her powers, Regina realizes that she, too, has the power to find her happy ending.
Ironically, in our world, Regina is the hero who must win the trust of Maleficent and her minions of darkness so that she can discover the secret weapon they have that will lead them to the Author. While Regina’s motive for finding the Author is so she can find her own happy ending, the Queens of Darkness have a much more sinister motive; to claim their own happy endings by destroying the happiness of all the heroes. When Maleficent challenges Regina’s resolve by having her kidnap Pinocchio so they can use him to locate the mysterious Author, Regina rises to this challenge, even though doing so meant betraying Emma’s trust. When she finally reaches the villains’ lair, Regina discovers the villains’ true secret; a secret that is darker than any of the heroes were anticipating.
