Once Upon a Time: Heroes and Villains
In this chapter of OUAT Season 4, Regina and Belle face a heartbreaking choice that will affect both of their happy endings. The heroes bid farewell to Anna and Elsa as they return to their lives in Arendelle. And Storybrooke is threatened when a trio of malevolent villains known as the Queens of Darkness joins forces with Rumplestiltskin.
For Regina, it finally looked like her happy ending with Robin Hood was secure. Although the death of the Snow Queen broke the curse on Marian and allowed her to survive, Marian was willing to sacrifice her happy ending with Robin Hood so that he and Regina could be together. And although Robin Hood lives by a code of honor and truth, it is that same code which compels him to follow his heart to Regina instead of returning to Marian and his son. When the curse re-emerges and Marian’s life once again hangs in the balance, Regina makes the ultimate sacrifice in the name of love; she tells Robin that he and Marian must leave Storybrooke, even though doing so meant that she and Robin would never find their happy ending. She loved him enough to let him go even though this meant her own heart would be broken. And although Robin does go with Marian and his son, I believe that his heart remains behind with Regina. There is a moment, after he says goodbye to Regina, when Robin tries to say something. Although he never says the words, I believe that Robin was expressing his love to her. The fact that he is crying when he passes through the barrier, makes me believe his love for Regina was real and that his heart was broken at the thought of saying goodbye to her.
For Belle, the path she chooses is more about a choice that she must make rather than a sacrifice. When the Maleficent, Ursula and Cruella – the self-proclaimed Queens of Darkness – use Belle as leverage to obtain a magic gauntlet from Rumplestiltskin in order to ensure they get their happy endings, Rumple chooses to give them the gauntlet in order to save Belle’s life. Although he tells Belle that he did this so that he would be the one to crush her heart instead of them, I believe his true reason for saving her is because he truly does care about her. When Belle discovers the terrible secret that Rumple has been keeping from her – that he has kept the real dagger – she uses the real dagger to force Rumple to cross the barrier. The funny thing is although Belle says that she is not enough for Rumple and his only love is for power and all she can see in him now is the beast rather than the man, when he crosses over the town line, instead of being happy that he is banished, she turns her back to him...almost as though the thought of seeing him suffer is too painful for her to watch. The fact that she is crying as she banishes Rumple from Storybrooke shows that like Regina, Belle is also heartbroken at the thought of saying goodbye to the man she loves.
