Despicable Me
Director: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud
Cast: Steve Carell, Jason Segal, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Elsie Fisher
When a super villain named Gru adopts three orphaned sisters named Margo, Edith and Agnes to aid him in his quest to steal the moon, what begins as a happenstance encounter soon turns into something altogether different.
One of the greatest strengths of this movie may be found in the character of Gru, himself. While he is initially portrayed as a super villain who is willing to go to extraordinary lengths to achieve his prize, in his heart, he is much more than that. Although his initial motive for adopting the three orphaned sisters was so that he could use them as a diversion in his plan to steal the moon, Gru quickly realizes that his growing bond with the girls offers him something that he has not yet been able to achieve in his lonely life; the unconditional love of family.
While he is regarded with harsh disdain by his mother when he shares his dreams of being an astronaut with her as a child and the bank owner, Mr. Perkins, when he fails to impress him with his scheme to steal the moon, Gru’s relationship with the children strikes an altogether different tone. While at first he is baffled by the girls’ tenacious and rambunctious behavior and his own struggles with learning how to be a parent, as the bond between Gru and the children grows stronger, they slowly break through the layers of pain and loneliness surrounding his heart and teach him how to love again.
The children’s love for Gru is illustrated when they help him fulfill his dream of going to the moon by giving him their life savings after Mr. Perkins refuses to fund his diabolical scheme. Gru returns that love when he rescues the children after they are kidnapped by the malevolent Dr. Perkins who uses them to force Gru to relinquish the moon to him. His love for them is also the catalyst which inspires Gru to adopt the girls and share his story with them.
"Despicable Me" is hilarious and heartwarming film that illustrates perfectly the unconditional love of family. The animation is stunning, the casting is stellar, and the characters in the film - and especially the character of Gru - are ones that the entire family will fall in love with. If you enjoy animated films, then "Despicable Me" is definitely one that is worthy of your time.
