Chimpanzee
Narrator: Tim Allen
Oscar is an adorable baby chimpanzee who is being raised by his mother, Isha, in the pristine beauty of Africa’s Ivory Coast rainforest. When an unexpected tragedy leaves Oscar orphaned and alone, his life is saved when Freddy, the leader of his family, adopts Oscar and raises him as his own son.
One of the most powerful themes in this film is the bond between parent and child. The bond shared between Oscar and his mother, Isha, is strong because like any child, Oscar depends on his mother for his survival. When she is alive, Isha devotes her life to caring for her young son and protecting him from the dangers lurking outside their clan. When his mother is suddenly taken from him, Oscar tries to remember the lessons his mother taught him about survival, but his inexperience, along with the fear and loneliness clouding his memory, make survival nearly impossible for the young chimp.
The bond that is established between Oscar and his adopted father, Freddy, is nothing short of miraculous. Following his mother’s tragic death, Oscar attempts to persuade the other females in his group to adopt him, but none of the other females will accept him. As Oscar begins to realize that he is truly alone, he begins to follow Freddy, the alpha male of the group, and imitate the older ape in a desperate effort to survive. When Freddy allows Oscar to ride on his back, this act is significant because it symbolizes Freddy’s willingness to accept Oscar as his own son. According to the film’s producers, the bond shared between Oscar and Freddy is remarkable because this is the first time that a male chimpanzee adopting an infant has been documented on film. Although Freddy’s position as alpha male forces him to divide his time between caring for Oscar and protecting his clan from a rival group of chimpanzees, Oscar thrives under the care of his adopted father and their bond allows Oscar to learn the secrets of surviving in the rainforest.
“Chimpanzee” is a charming and well-told story that combines layers of humor, love, and heartbreaking truth to tell Oscar’s story. While there is very little dialogue in the film apart from Tim Allen’s narration, the heartfelt moments shared between Oscar and his family – especially Isha and Freddy – make this film one that the whole family can enjoy.
