Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Director: Zack Snyder
Cast: Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Gal Gadot
When fear causes two of the world’s most renowned superheroes to clash, the world must choose whether to follow the dark vigilante, Batman, or the noble guardian of Metropolis, Superman. As the heroes’ war unfolds, a new villain rises from the shadows; a villain that threatens everything that both Batman and Superman has fought to protect. Will Batman and Superman restore peace or will evil finally triumph over good?
Superheroes have always represented the essence of good overcoming evil. They are the guardians of peace; warriors who protect the people from villains that seek to destroy them. But what if a superhero was seen in an altogether different light; a light that would portray them not as a noble savior, but as an entity that humanity should fear? Although both Batman and Superman are regarded as heroes, when they dare to challenge humanity’s comfortable perception of their power, they become something else entirely; an entity that humanity fears. The truth is, when power is not respected, the men who wield that power inevitably fall to corruption. It is only when the hero truly respects that power and accepts the responsibility and sacrifice that comes with it that they become true heroes.
The irony of “Batman v Superman” is that while both Superman and Batman are considered heroes, they share another thing in common. Their human counterparts, Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne, have both clearly established that they don’t trust the other’s “Superhero” identity. While Clark Kent is threatened by Gotham’s dark knight because he acts outside the law, Bruce Wayne is threatened by Superman because he feels that while Superman claims to be a hero, his power makes him fatal to humanity. It is only when these heroes stop fighting each other and realize that they must work together to defeat the true villain that they become the heroes that the world so desperately needs.
While it strikes a very different tone from other films in the superhero genre, I will say with absolute sincerity that I think “Batman v Superman” is one of the best films in either franchise. The casting is exceptional…Ben Affleck does a surprisingly good job playing an older version of Gotham’s dark knight, Batman and Henry Cavill does well as the strong and noble Superman. The cinematography and music are also excellent and the story, while unique in its own way, is still very strong. These are but a few reasons why I think “Batman v Superman” is worth watching.
