Bambi
Director: David Hand
Cast: Hardie Albright, Peter Behn, Stan Alexander, Paula Winslowe, Fred Shields
Bambi, the fourth installment in the Disney Classic series, is a unique and beautifully animated coming-of-age story that chronicles the life of a young deer named Bambi as he grows to take his place as the new prince of the forest.
Bambi’s life is painted very much through an emotional lens and the subtle conveyed in silence. As a child, he is curious about his surroundings, but he is quick to seek his mother’s protection when he is frightened. He expresses a desire to learn new things, but he also is completely baffled when he encounters things he doesn’t understand (like learning new words). As the seasons transform the forest into a frigid and barren wasteland, the audience witnesses the desperation that Bambi and his mother feel as they search for food that isn’t there. When he realizes the truth of his mother’s fate, Bambi’s pain is expressed in silence, his tears mingling with the snow as he follows his father away.
One of the more subtle themes woven through Bambi is protection. As a child, Bambi’s mother is his first guardian. She protects her son when he rushes out onto the meadow by warning him of the dangers that they may encounter. When the rain is crashing around them, and Bambi is frightened, his mother watches over him as he sleeps. When they are threatened by Man, Bambi’s mother urges him to safety and sacrifices her own life to protect her child from the unseen enemy.
Bambi’s father, the Great Prince, also plays a significant role in his son’s life. When Bambi is born, the Great Prince watches over the young prince and his mother after the other animals leave. The first time Man attacks the forest, Bambi is separated from his mother as the animals flee, and his father risks his own life when he returns to the meadow to find Bambi and restore him to his mother. When Bambi’s mother is killed, his father finds Bambi lost and alone in the snow and takes him as his own to care for. When Man attacks the forest a second time his father warns Bambi of the imminent danger and when Bambi is shot, his Father returns to save him once again and leads him out of the fire and back to Faline.
Bambi is one of Disney’s most unique films. The story, conveyed with silence and emotions more than words, paints a vivid picture which leaves the audience entranced. The animation, which conveys a rich and striking marriage of vibrant characters and soft backgrounds, is some of the most beautiful that Disney has conveyed, and transcends the creative essence of past Disney movies. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves Disney animation at its best.
