Prince of Egypt will inspire you to believe
Director: Brenda Chapman, Steve Hickner, Simon Wells
Cast: Val Kilmer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Ralph Fiennes, Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren,
“The Prince of Egypt” brings to life the story of Moses, as he embarks on a journey to free his people from the shackles of slavery in Egypt and lead them into the Promised Land.
Faith is a very powerful theme in “The Prince of Egypt”, and nowhere is it reflected more clearly than in the women who surround Moses: his mother, Yocheved, his sister, Miriam, and his wife, Tzipporah. Moses’ mother makes the ultimate sacrifice when she chooses to cast her infant son into the Nile River in a basket to protect him from death at the hands of Pharoah. Her sacrifice was one of pure love: she wanted Moses to be free, even though that freedom meant that she would not be with him.
The faith of Moses’ sister, Miriam, is also very strong. As a child, Miriam’s prayer for Moses is that he would one day return to deliver his people to freedom. When Moses is reunited with Miriam and her brother, Aaron, years later, it is Miriam who tells Moses his true birthright and reminds him that he is the one who was called to deliver his people to freedom. Although he initially dismisses Miriam’s words, his heart is softened when he hears Miriam sing the lullaby that his mother sang to him when he was an infant. Miriam’s faith continues to shine when Moses is called by God to return from wandering in the wilderness and free his people from the shackles of slavery. While the others doubt Moses’ words, Miriam remains steadfast in her belief that Moses will free them from Pharaoh.
When Moses flees into the desert, he is rescued from a well by Tzipporah, a beautiful Midianite woman who Moses had originally met in Egypt as a captive. When Moses is called by God to return to Egypt and free his people from Rameses, TTzipporah journeys with him into Egypt. As Moses pleads with Rameses to free his people, both Tzipporah and Miriam’s faith is illustrated when they choose to remain by Moses’ side and support him as God’s judgments rain down on Egypt.
Although they are not related by blood, the bond shared between Moses and his adopted brother, Rameses, while at times tinged with jealousy, is still very strong. Their bond is challenged when Rameses becomes Pharaoh and Moses returns to free the Hebrew people the shackles of slavery, but the love shared between them is not so easily broken.
“The Prince of Egypt” is one of the best movies that Dreamworks has created to date. The animation is, without a doubt, some of the most beautiful that Dreamworks has ever created. The musical score only adds to the beauty of the film with its haunting melodies and heartfelt lyrics. The casting is exceptional, and the story, while it has been told before, is still a powerful re-imagining of the faith and courage of Moses. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys Dreamworks animation at its best.
