Kung Fu Panda 3
Director: Alessandro Carloni, Jennifer Yuh Nelson
Cast: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, David Cross, Bryan Cranston, J.K. Simmons
In this third installment of the epic “Kung Fu Panda” saga, Po faces his greatest challenge yet when a new adversary named Kai threatens to destroy everything the Dragon Warrior holds dear. When fate allows Po to be reunited with his long lost father, Li, he must embark on a journey to discover who he truly is and master the art of Chi.
Chi plays a very important role in this film and it is illustrated in two very distinct ways by the Dragon Warrior, Po, and the exiled villain, Kai.
For Kai, Chi is synonymous with power. He believes by taking the Chi of Kung Fu masters for himself, he will achieve ultimate power and become the strongest master of Kung Fu. When he learns that Master Oogway has set the Dragon Warrior, Po, on a path to defeat him, Kai takes Oogway’s Chi to escape from the Spirit World. The irony of Kai’s lust for power is that even with all of the Kung Fu master’s Chi at his command, he was still not strong enough to defeat Po because he could not recognize the true essence of Chi.
Master Shifu teaches Po that Chi is something very precious; spiritual essence that embodies every living thing. He tells Po that in order to master Chi, one must first master themselves and herein is found the essence of Po’s journey. In this film, Po is a little bit lost when it comes to his own identity. He struggles with accepting his identity as the Dragon Warrior…a teacher…a son…and even a panda and because of this, he also struggles with mastering Chi. When Master Shifu and his warriors learn that the villainous Kai has escaped from the Spirit Realm and is stealing the Chi from all the Kung Fu masters in China, they are told that he can only be defeated by a true master of Chi – and that Po is the one chosen to be that master. In the end, while he has the absolute support of Tigress, his newfound father, Li, and the rest of the pandas in Li’s village and they give their Chi to Po to help him overcome Kai, Po ultimately has to master his identity alone.
“Kung Fu Panda 3” is a brilliant addition to the Kung Fu Panda trilogy. The animation in this film is absolutely stunning, the casting is brilliant, and the story is one both children and adults can understand. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who loves the “Kung Fu Panda” trilogy.
