Finding Nemo
Director: Andrew Stanton, Lee Unkrich
Cast: Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, Alexander Gould
An overprotective clownfish named Marlin must overcome his fear of the unknown as he embarks on a journey to find his son and bring him home after he is abducted by divers in the Great Barrier Reef. The story is not so much about Nemo as it is about Marlin and the journey he must embark on, not only to save his son, but also to find healing in the aftermath of a heartbreaking tragedy.
When the story begins, Marlin and his wife, Coral, are about to become parents. Sadly, that joy is shattered when the lives of Coral and the eggs are tragically taken by a barracuda, leaving Marlin heartbroken and alone. Miraculously though, Marlin’s dream of having a family is not quite lost because after he realizes that Coral is gone, he discovers that one tiny egg has survived. As Marlin holds his precious unborn child, who he names Nemo, he makes his son a promise to never let anything happen to him.
When Marlin loses Nemo, his desperation to find his lost son is two-fold. He is reliving his worst nightmare having already endured the devastating loss of his wife and unborn children, and he is emotionally shattered because he has broken the promise he made to his unborn son. His fear of having to re-live the pain that he suffered in the past is what compels Marlin to step out of his safe little bubble and embark on a journey across the ocean to find his missing child.
When Marlin is finally reunited with his son, his worst fear is almost realized when he believes that Nemo has died. When he realizes that Nemo is alive, the joy that both of them feel at being reunited heals their bond and allows Marlin to realize that he has kept his promise to his son by loving him unconditionally. He also realizes that it is OK to let Nemo go because even though they are not together, their bond as father and son will never truly be broken.
“Finding Nemo” is one of the most beautiful and emotionally heartfelt films that Pixar has created to date. The animation is stunning, the characters – especially Marlin and Dory - are unforgettable, and the story is one that both children and adults can relate to. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who loves Pixar animation at its best.
